My recent ongoing documentary project Concubines of New York has been awarded a 2007-2008 Manhattan Community Arts Fund grant. The award is granted by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and New York City Department of Cultural Affaires.
About Concubines of New York
Chinese Opera is a national treasure with a history of 600 years and is one of the most sophisticated art forms in China. In New York City, several underground Chinese Opera groups with some of the best Chinese Opera performers are also promoting China Opera art in and around the city with lack of mainstream audiences and financial support as they once did in China. I have followed these Chinese Opera performers and document their struggling and passionate performance life. This project reveals the difficult journey of this exquisite but less appreciated art form and culture heritage surviving in America.
